stolen passport (ILR samp was on it)

Friend living in UK with ILR stolen passport +wallet while on holiday in Mexico.

British embassy/consulate say: "can only help UK citizens"

Embassy of his home country (morocco) say they could issue emergency passport (but would take time + week-ends)

airline won't let him board his return flight to UK (say has no way to prove who he is)..

is this not ridiculous?? he has to be back at work in London Monday am..

After getting a new passport, he may also have to apply for a returning residents entry clearance.

Shit happens. We were stuck in Thailand for an extra week because a demo closed the airport. Couldn't get back to work. Emailed employers. Decent employers give you a bit of latitude.

It's not the British Embassy's fault. I'm sure once he's got a passport he can ask them to expedite an application, but it's unreasonable to expect them to do anything until then.

He's insured, of course?

Agreed - he's Moroccan not British - that's where his beef is.

All True but I think that when he say isn't it ridiculous it is more stress than exasperation.
If that happened to you and you were getting no joy (even though, everyone's response is the correct one) would you be so calm and collected. He is just trying to get his friend to get back to work on time.
Advice: Tell friend to inform employer, he might be late and to be prepared to get a call from IO to verify his employment at the border and perhaps fax any paperwork showing that he is legally working in the UK

The best advice is to get your friend to ask the airline to contact the UKBA at the airport or airport terminal he's trying to get to to get authority to carry with no Carriers' Liability penalty. It is standard practice and a CIO can authorise it.

I am just saying anyone could have their passport/wallet stolen while on holiday..

If you are British: the Embassy/High Commission WILL do something about it

if you are resident in UK: depends on how cooperative is airline and how cooperative is the UKBA
