Skilled Worker to GTV - British Born children

Post by snober » Wed Oct 22, 2025 8:18 pm

I first arrived in the United Kingdom as a student in 2010, and my eldest son was born here in the same year. I later returned to the UK on a Skilled Worker visa with my four dependants on 29 December 2023. Our current visas are valid until 27 January 2027.

I have now received the Global Talent Visa endorsement and would be grateful for clarification on the following points:

1. What would be the most appropriate time for me to apply for the Global Talent Visa?

2. For how long should I apply for the visa to ensure that my dependants can complete the required residence period for settlement?

3. When should my dependants apply for their visa extensions to align with the settlement timeline?

4. As my eldest son was born in the UK in 2010, does he need to apply for a visa at this stage? I plan to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the first week of December 2026, after which he will be eligible for naturalisation.

OR

Any other best option in my case. As i received GTV endorsement on 20th October (have 90 days to apply)

1. You can apply for a GTV at any time, within the validity of the endorsement.

2. and 3. The length of your GTV is up to you, you can choose anything from one to five years. Your dependants can stay with their current visas and apply for an extension at any time by/before the expiry date.

4. The British born child (under 18 years old) can be registered as British once either parent is settled.

Thanks for reply.

If I applied one year GTV in December 2025 (as endorsement will end in mind January) then I will be eligible to apply ILR in December 2026. If I will apply ILR at priority so that I can apply British born son's naturalization before ending his visa on 27 January 2027.

My wife and 2 children have visa and Skilled dependant till 27 January 2027. Can I extend their visa for 2 years. As will be at ILR that time.

Some one told me that my dependent clock of 5 years will start again if I will extend their visa after getting ILR. Because I will shift them direct from Skilled worker dependent to ILR depends.

Please guide me in this

The visa extension for dependants will be three years, you cannot choose a shorter time.

That someone is wrong. Dependants will extend their visas as GTV dependants because that is the last leave you had before ILR, that will not reset their clocks. Also there is no such thing as ILR dependants.

A bundle of thanks.

Now I only want some more clarity.

I need 1 year (GTV) to complete my 3 years (as I already spent 2 years at SW), and I can apply for ILR in December 2026.

1. I will apply mine on 15 December 2025 for 1 year's GTV. Can my dependants apply for a 3-year global dependant visa at the same time?

2. Is there any need to convert a British-born dependant visa from SW dependant to global talent dependant, as he already has an SW dependant visa till 27 January 2027? Till that time, I will get ILR and can apply for his naturalisation.

2. Your dependents will not get a visa extension that exceeds yours. If you apply for a 1 year extension, rhey will also get a 1 year extension. The 3 years extension applies if you have ILR.

3. Your dependents apply for an extension before their current visa expires. Your UK born child (not British born as he is not British, yes terminology is important) can register (adults naturalise) once either parent gets ilr. The child does not need a valid visa. Registration can take up to 6 months, sometimes longer. If the child doea not have a valid visa, they can't get free NHS. You will need to arrange private health insurance.
