Citizenship application eligibility date

Post by ssgc987 » Mon May 04, 2026 2:16 am

My ILR was granted last month. Route is SET(O) Global Talent Dependant with my wife. My wife got her ILR in August 2025. She is planning to apply for citizenship in August 2026. Both of us have already completed more than 5 years in the UK.

My question is, when is the earliest I can apply for citizenship, is it:
a. 12 months from my own ILR approval?
b. Or immediately after my wife gets her citizenship, even is this is before 12 months from my ILR approval, considering that then I would be married to a British citizen?

Thanks for your help.

Option B would be earliest, if your wife is granted citizenship before you have completed 12 months as ILR holder.
In that case you could apply as spouse of a British citizen.

Note that Option B ("immediately after my wife gets her citizenship") only applies after your wife attends the citizenship ceremony and is physically handed her naturalisation certificate, which can be a few weeks to months (depending on your local council) after she gets her approval letter/email.

I thought it could take up to 6 months for the citizenship results to be back?

You are correct but it will only be an advisory email- citizenship is conferred by the certificate handed out at the oath ceremony.

So there’s additional waiting time for attending the ceremony which could be a few weeks or sometimes a month or two. Note that the ceremonies are organised by councils and frequency varies.

As mentioned you may be able to arrange a private ceremony for an additional fee. Subject to availability.
