Tax returns for independent contractor

Post by Ums » Tue Oct 13, 2009 8:49 pm

I am employed full time and also do consultancy for a firm since Jan 2009.

I have filed a tax return in 2007 and have a tax reference number.
I do not have a UTR to file SA. My accountant has sent in a paper form to the HMRC last month but not heard anything back.

I called the office today and was told that I am not registered as self employed and was asked to do so online. I did that. How long does it take to get the UTR?

Can I apply for extension with invoices, bank statements showing the income and accountants letter?

Will they ask for the Tax return also? If so will it be a problem if I give the return the accountant submitted without the UTR.

I have an appt next week and would appreciate some reponse esp fro Push, Chetan and Mvent

Your Accountant should phone HMRC and ask to be told your UTR. Every taxpayer has been allocated a UTR. It is just that unless someone is into Self Assessment they will not be made aware of their UTR.

I presume you have authorised your Accountant to act on your behalf?

Thanks John.

I will ask my accountant to do so.
Could I also call HRMC and ask for the UTR?

You could indeed do that.

Your situation is bit strange.

If you have filed tax return in 2007 then you should have your your UTR number. Since no tax returns can be filed without UTR number.

Asssuming it is the first time you got registered online recently then UTR number can only be issued by HMRC after at least 4 weeks of getting registration done. This is the normal practice.

UTR numbers are not told or disclosed over the phone by HMRC. They are only sent by post.
