US citizen, marrying an Irish citizen

Post by dhtaylor » Mon Apr 14, 2014 9:05 am

I am a US citizen in a long-term relationship with an Irishwoman and we are planning to get married later this year.

I understand that I could then apply for permission to reside (Stamp 3) or work in Ireland (Stamp 4).

What we're not clear on is how long the application process actually takes. The INIS web site says "up to 12 months" and it sounds like they want to take both of our passports. As the owner of a business that requires me to travel frequently, I cannot just surrender my passport for 12 months. I can run my business from the US or Ireland, but I need to be able to travel.

Can anyone shed some light on the whole process of getting Stamp 3 or 4?

Thanks

Dan

Hi,

Me and my wife just went through the same, she is a mexican citizen but a US LPR. You basically just travel to Ireland together, show the marriage cert, they'll ask a few questions, take her picture and finger prints. Stamp her passport, that says something like she is here to be with spouse. You will then report together to your local garda station, where they will issue her a stamp 4 resident card and stamp her passport on the day. No year wait. No fees as its free for spouses.

Could not be easier. Just maybe ring up your local garda station to confrim the information, have a bit of craic with him, he will remember you, tell you what to do, and then you can tell the immigration officer at the airport, x told you from x station to get the stamp and go see him,

Make sure she gets the stamp for spouse of Irish citizen and not just a visitor stamp as that complicates things.

Any questions just ask, we literally did it there last month
