British Citizenship - Are my dates correct?

Post by RedSpeed » Mon Feb 18, 2008 8:05 pm

Hello All,

This group has been of great help for which I can not thank you enough. Here I am again with few more queries..

My timeline….
1) I entered UK in JUN 2001 as a student
2) I started work 30 MAY 2002 on receiving of a work permit
3) Got ILR stamp on 4 MAY 2007

Now I am trying to prepare application for British Citizenship / Naturalisation

I have gone through AN guideline and the application form and would like some help in the issues I am not clear about.

- Can I apply on 4/05/2008 or do I have to wait till 30/05/2008 for completing my 6 years period considering that I have received my ILR on 4th MAY 2007 which is one month earlier then 5 years period for ILR.
- As per my understanding I should have been present in the UK exactly 5 years for successful application. So for 4th May 2008 application I should have been in the country on 5/05/2003 and for 30/05/08 application 31/05/2003. But I am not sure if my calculation is logical!!! Not sure if this has to be 6 years that is 2002.

Finally,…I am an Indian citizen and would like to retain my Indian citizenship but I have not found a clear flow of tasks I should be following to achieve dual citizenship.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Many thanks

You can apply anytime on or after 5th May 2007 provided you meet the 5 year residence requirement at that time.

5 years. The guide AN makes that very clear.

Many people get confused when they start trying to "mix" the immigration and nationality rules.

You can't keep your Indian citizenship if you want to become British. Simple as that.

Your choices are:

- Remain an Indian citizen with U.K. ILR; or
- Become a British citizen with a PIO Card; or
- Become a British citizen with Overseas Citizenship of India

Thanks JAJ,

This is so tricky. I think I have to be bit careful. I was in Belgium during 12/05/03 to 16/05/03 and I am likely to be in Canada in first week of 05/08. I have to just time it right so when they receive the application all the dates make sense to themï

No, You can not apply British citizenship until 5th MAY 2008 if you meet the 5 year residence requirement at that time. Not on or after 5th May 2007.
