Citizenship process steps

Post by travelagain1 » Tue Feb 13, 2024 1:45 pm

Hi, I had some questions regarding the citizenship process and timeline.

We received an approval for citizenship this week from the home office

And the earliest appointment that is available for ceremony is end March 2024.
There are no available dates for private ceremony either

1) So suppose I need to travel outside UK between now and end of March 2024 (Ceremony date) is that ok ?

2) And if I want to travel after the ceremony and before I get the UK passport, can I travel outside the UK ?

3) What are the steps I need to do after getting the citizenship document in March, should I
  • Surrender existing Indian Passport
    Apply for British Passport
    Apply for OCI
OR
  • Apply for British Passport
    Surrender Indian Passport
    Apply for OCI
Or some other process or sequence of steps?

Thanks in advance.

someone else with expertise of OCI will need to respond to this as it's not under British law.

Thanks in advance.

there should be a few months grace period where you can still use Indian passport to travel before surrendering - check on their website. If so, then it would seem sensible to first apply for the british passport and only then surrender the previous one, atleast then you can still travel on the said indian passport whilst waiting.

Cannot travel on Indian passport, as the BRP loses validity once british citizenship is acquired. OP could be refused boarding. One must apply and obtain a British passport before travelling abroad upon becoming British.
