thai girlfriend in dublin

Post by daniele777 » Tue Oct 13, 2009 2:54 pm

Dear all,

this is my first post and i hope it will be short enough not to bother you.

I am an italian Phd student living in Dublin. My girlfriend is from Bangkok and she can speak english perfectly as she lived for more than 1 year and a half in the USA.

She would love to study International Relations here but she doesn't have enough money to pay for her studies and obtaining a scholarship in this field is even more difficult.

So I was thinking in finding her a job in Dublin (at least for 1 year) so that she can accumulate some money to pay for her studies (certainly more than the amount she can obtain in Bangkok). She worked for 8 years in the broadcasting field so we started looking for possible jobs in this area.

Moreover we were looking on how to obtain a work permit but I found out that the number of eligible jobs for work permits is less than the number of non-eligible ones!!

No Operator/Production staff
No Hotel, tourism and catering staff except chefs
Not even Child minders!
and so on...

What kind of job should I look for in order to bringing her here in your opinion? Which is the best way to pursue?

We are really desperate as we want to live together in this beautiful country but it seems this country is practically closed to her! I can't believe it, there must be a way!

Thanks a lot for your precious help and sorry if the post is too long!

Cheers,

Daniele

Hi!
Thanks for replying.
We knew each other since an year and we are together since 3 months.

She wants to study here but scholarships are difficult to obtain and a taught programme would be the only option. In order to pay the fees (which for non EU students are really high) we are trying at least to find a job to pay for her studies. She doesn't pretend a great job opportunity, just something which will let her live normally and pay the course for the beginning. But it seems that work permits are not released for a lot of potential jobs that she could do (like child care, hotel staff, production jobs in broadcasting companies...).

I just want to ask you guys what will you do in my case, maybe you have suggestions and same experiences to share. I tried a lot of different things, sent a lot of CVs and checked a lot of studying opportunities around here but with no results.

Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it.

Cheers,

Daniele

Being brutally honest, she's got no chance of getting a job unless she's a qualified professional with experience. Local and EU labour has to be exhausted before a non-skilled non-EU worker would even be considered.

She'll either just have to save up in Thailand or maybe see if she can get something in Singapore if she's entitled to work there as the money is better there than it is in Thailand. That being said, the Singapore job market is only employing non-locals if a local can't do the job, so similar to the EU really.

Thanks a lot for your reply meats.

Unfortunately I think you're right, I feel the same as u.

I just had a little bit of hope because actually i think she can be considered professionally qualified since she got a bachelor's degree in Multimedia and Mass Communication and she has 8 years of work experience in the field of Broadcasting and TV production (she actually worked for TV companies in Bangkok as creative, assistant director, actors coach and so on). She is also relatively young, being 28 years old.

The problem, as u said, is finding a similar job here....

Thanks again for your reply, I would like to hear as much opinions as possible.

Cheers,

Daniele

In another 21 months she will be:

(If Ireland follows the UK's stance).
I am no longer posting publicly on this website - PM me if needed.

Assuming that they live together for 21 months, which by the sounds of it could be rather difficult.
