MN1 Form Application for registration of a child as a British Citizen.

Post by Zanarkand » Thu Sep 03, 2020 6:19 pm

Hello,

I am trying to register my son who was born a few months ago in Mexico as a British Citizen.

I'm a British Citizen, naturalized in 2006, and had my ILR around the year 2000. His mother (my wife) is a Mexican citizen who had a student visa initially and then a full UK visa after our marriage but in the end we decided to settle in Mexico around 5 years ago.

At the moment I'm trying to get a biometric enrolment in Mexico City, but what I'm struggling to do is fill in the form.
Under what section is my son eligible for his citizenship?

Thank you in advance,

Your son is automatically British by descent. You do NOT have to register him as British on form MN1 if he was born after you became British.

Apply directly for a British passport.

Applying for a first passport (child born abroad)

Post by Zanarkand » Fri Sep 11, 2020 12:06 am

Hello,

I'm currently applying for my son's first passport and I have some questions regarding the documents needed. I would be grateful for any advice so I'll start off with a little background information.

I'm a naturalized British citizen since 2001 and recieved my passport in 2006. My wife is a Mexican citizen and we've settled in mexico for a while where my son was born.

The applicant's documents are straightfoward.

1. Parents' documents. Here they ask for the naturilisation certificate or birth certificate. So I should send my naturilisation certificate and my wifes birth certificate (not British).

2. Grandparents' documents. Here they asked for birth certificates from both the maternal and paternal grandparents and marriage certificates if they are applicable which I don't think are. The paternal grandparents are also natrisiled British citizens like I am etc but they don't have birth certificates. Would I send their passports or naturilastion documents instead?

3. Should I translate all none english documents such as my wives birth certificate?

4. They only asked for my name and passport number so I guess they don't need me to send my passport or a copy.

Thank you in advance,

1. Your naturalisation certificate as that is the basis the child qualifies for a British passport.

2. Not required as you are naturalised not British born.

3. Wife's birth certificate not required.

4. Your naturalisation cert is what is proof of your citizenship.

Regarding my naturalization certificate; I had my surname changed. I've changed my passport, should I send my old british passport plus change of name deed poll along with the application?
