British Citizen returning on foreign passport

Post by KseniaN » Thu Jan 16, 2014 5:20 pm

I am due to return to the UK on Saturday (in two days) and have lost my British passport. Is it possible at all to re-enter the country on my Russian passport (which is new and HASN'T got the ILR stamp on it)if accompanied by my Certificate of Naturalisation as proof of British citizenship? I know it may be possible for me to obtain emergency travel documents, but I am reluctant to spend £95 and day at the British embassy in order to do this unless I really have to.

Have you got your old passport with ILR stamp in with you??

If you do, you can use both old and new passport, proving ILR and your certificate of naturalisation to re-enter the UK. That is what my daughter did and she didn't have any problems.

No, that is the problem :(. I have heard of people re-entering on passports with the ILR and even with two passports, one new and one old with the ILR, but never on a passport without one.

The issue won't be to enter the UK but to get to the UK. Russian passport holders require a visa to travel to the UK. The airline will refuse to let you board without a visa. A naturalisation certificate is not a visa,

But then surely an expired passport with an ILR is not a valid visa either and yet is it accepted by Stupid.

You can try to convince the airline that the piece of paper you hold proves you are British. I suspect they won't be impressed.
For the airline, ILR is like a visa and looks much more formal than the naturalisation certificate.

Have you got a photocopy of your passport? You can try and call the immigration office in the airport you suppose to land in and ask them for confirmation of your status and then ask the airline to call them to verify that.

Yes, I understand, I'm just trying as best as I can to get myself out of a long and costly trip, but I suspect it may be unavoidable :(.

I have a photocopy of my British passport in my email somewhere, yes. I will try calling tomorrow morning.
