Correcting a mistake on my naturalisation certificate

Post by Lopand » Fri Sep 25, 2020 10:33 pm

I thought that my journey was almost over when I received the invitation letter from the Home Office, but it appears that they've made a mistake on my Country of Birth (they used the country of my nationality, but I was born in a different country).

I went back to my naturalisation application form and I wrote on my Country of Birth the correct one, so it is definitely their mistake.

Does anyone here have experience with filing an "Application for correction of a registration or naturalisation certificate"? How long would it take for me to receive back the correct certificate? Will it be sent directly to my home address or to my council?

Thanks in advance.

Took almost 2 months in my case (in January/February); and I had to send them (by mail) a reminder letter asking about the status of my certificate - after that a caseworker actually called me and assured me new certificate was on the way.
There was someone on this forum recently for whom it is taking longer time, in spite of them contacting MP etc.
They send new certificate to your home directly.
Be sure to include evidence that you submitted correct information (like copy of your application), so that you do not have to pay

Thank you very much, that's very helpful. Did they contact you for further clarifications or simply sent the new certificate after the long wait?

I would suggest wait for your ceremony to see what the certificate says.

They state on the invitation letter the details that are printed on the certificate, so I doubt that it would be different, but I should wait to receive it regardless.

There have been members reporting errors in the letter and then the cert was correct.

For future readers: I had my Citizenship Ceremony today. The mistake that appeared on my invitation letter was printed on my Citizenship Certificate as well. Right after my ceremony, I posted my original Citizenship Certificate with a signed Form RR and a copy of my passport, back to the Home Office for correction. It was posted today via Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm.

I suspect that it will take a while for me to receive the corrected certificate back, but crossing my fingers for a quick process. Unfortunately, back to the waiting game!

Hi Lopand I am unable to PM you
I'm so sorry to hear your certificate also had an error

My corrected certificate just came in a regular white envelope in standard post, no tracking no signing, you couldn't even tell it was an important document!! Plus my postman stuffed it into my mailbox so it was all wrinkled!

Good luck with yours

I would just like to post an update, that I've been waiting for the corrected citizenship certificate for nearly 5 weeks now, but didn't receive it yet. The country is getting into another lockdown and I'm losing hope of getting it back and applying for a British passport before the end of the year.

I contacted my MP (twice) and sent the HO a follow up letter by post to enquire the progress of the process, but the HO didn't respond to me or to my MP at all.

Is there anything else that I can do to try to speed this up? Is there a valid email address that may be relevant?

For future readers: I received a letter yesterday saying that my request for correction has been accepted and my corrected certificate will be issued and sent shortly. And indeed, I received the corrected certificate today. It arrived in a simple white envelope. It took nearly 6 weeks. Good luck everyone!

Hi All

I am in a problem. I just received my Naturalisation Certificate (T2 General > ILR > Citizenship) end of November and applied for British Passport.

HMPO called yesterday stating an error (last name duplicated) in my Naturalization Certificate so they are returning the certificate back to me.

Now I understand I have to fill form RR https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... -07-18.pdf and wait for a few weeks before I get it corrected.

Q1) The guidance on ID proof isnt clear and when I called UKVI they were as usual useless in telling me the answer. Does anyone what documents (original/copies) are acceptable for this ? (e.g. Home country passport/Driving License/BRP)

Q2) If copies are allowed , I am fine as I have digital copies of everything like anyone else. But if they are not, I have a problem. I destroyed and sent my BRP; and my original passport is with HMPO which they wont return until I write a paper application to them. What should I do - get the passport back and whether they impacts my Passport processing time etc ? Or use my Driving License - from what I read above I might not get it back for months.

Any insight appreciated.
Thanks

You do not need to send the original documents, a copy is sufficient (except for the original certificate of naturalisation, of course). You can send a copy of your passport or your birth certificate that indicates the correct name.

I sent a copy of my passport to correct their error on my place of birth. I assume that a copy of other formal documents may also be accepted, you do not need to send more than one.

I also attached a printed copy of my citizenship application, to prove that the error is theirs and not mine, as I did indicate the correct place of birth. They may charge you if they conclude that it was your mistake.

I recommend posting it in a tracked special delivery, so you will have a proof of delivery.

Good luck!

Thanks @lopand.

I will surely send tracked. In fact I am going to send an extra prepaid tracked and addressed envelope in inside.

I'll be joining this feed soon...
Had my invitation letter yesterday...

They have somehow managed to get my "Name at Birth" wrong...
Hopefully the Certificate is right, but I know odds are really low...

Two more months...

That would be great. I am in the same boat. My spouse had incorrect place of birth on her certificate, have posted it on 29th Dec, delivery 30th Dec, now waiting. Hoping new lockdown will not delay things.

I hope it doesn't cause any more delays too...
Also hoping that most of the backlog is cleared now & they'll be able to issue the new certificates quick(ish)...

I tried to call yesterday but they didn't give me any useful information. Also emailed, but not had a response yet.
Please let me know if you hear or receive anything, I will too. :-)

I sent to "furtherNationalityEnquiries@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk & NationalityFrontEndTechnicalSpecialists@homeoffice.gov.uk

Might not get a response, but figured it was worth a try.

UPDATE... :D
I had a reply today from a caseworker. :D
As I sent to both email address's above, Im not sure which one was successful...

They couldn't give me any timelines due to covid & office having limited staff, but was very apologetic for the error.
They did say my information hasn't reached their office yet, which is a little concerning as it was signed for on 31st Dec. Hopefully still making its way up to the right department...

She said she would update me when my docs arrive & provide progress updates.
At least it was acknowledged which I am super grateful for.
Hopefully wont be months before its issued.

I have replied & attached copies of all the docs I sent, not sure if it will help at all but figure its worth a try.
Will let you know if I hear any more.
