Naturalisation enquiry

Hi,

Is it common for Home Office to request the original passport for naturalisation application? Is there a direct contact number to speak with HO advisor if I need to ask for exceptional circumstances or alternative options, instead of waiting for them to reply my email?? I need my passport for travelling next month so I really cannot post it away now...!
