You need to apply for
Returning Resident visa, as you have been away for more than two years and your ILR has lapsed.

Why did you decide to leave UK and return?
Returning Resident visa requires you to show sufficient ties and reasons to gain it and come back.
You might be better off going to the UK from scratch, via Skilled Worker or whichever way you used to enter UK before ILR, if that's still possible for you.

Your ILR has lapsed. Unless you demonstrate strong ties to the UK in your application, you cannot return here as a returning resident

You need to provide a range of evidence that you have resided in the UK since your were granted ILR to prove you have not lost your ILR status due to living abroad for 2 or more years. You also need to be in the UK to renew your ILR BRP card, you cannot do this from abroad.
Your challenge will have is that you have lived abroad for a long time.

Note also that a new BRP card will only be valid till 31st December 2024 as the system will become digital after that.

ILR renewal is meaningless as ILR is a permanent status and it does not expire (however it may be lost as in your case). Note that your ILR has lapsed and your status is now LOST as you have been outside the UK for more than 24 months. The fact that you have a BRP card with an expiry until the end of 2024 does not matter. That is the expiry date of all ILR BRP cards.
The returning resident visa simply reinstates the lost ILR status. You will have to come to the UK using that visa and collect your new ILR BRP card which will be valid again until 31/12/2024. BRP is simply used to SHOW/PROVE your status when required. A new digital proof of status system will be introduced very likely from early 2024. After the end of 2024, that system will be used to SHOW/PROVE your status instead of a BRP as all BRPs will be discontinued.

ILR doesn't expire - I expect you are referring to the expiry date on the BRP card. You need to apply for a new BRP >

These applications can take up to 6 months.
Note also that any new BRP card will only be valid till 31 December 2024, when they are phased out and a digital status will come into effect.
