Child born to British citizen parents abroad

Post by wahab8686 » Sat Mar 15, 2025 10:29 am

Dear Readers and mods,
I am a bit confused and overwhelmed I suppose reading info on gov.uk website and forums. called the British Counsulate and they forwarded me to HM Passport office who just sent me back to visit the gov.uk website.

I am a british citizen (national) by naturalisation, so is my wife (British Citizen) and we have both got our naturlisation certificates and passport etc.

we have 4 children together, three born inside UK so no problems applying for their birth certificates and passports, the fourth child was born recently in Saudi arabia, we have got the child KSA birth certificate and now I need to apply for her passport but not sure if I should apply for her UK birth certificate first
do i need to apply for citizenship first or just apply for a uk passport for child born outside UK.

also a question if the baby will receive a passport that will say british overseas national or it will be a normal UK passport,

lastly, is the child born outside uk has any different status to a child born in the uk..

i was reading about passport automatically granted by descent, can someone please explain the process.

many thanks

Apply for a passport directly. Child is British by Descent.
british overseas national
This has absolutely nothing to do with your child citizenship. It is a totally different route to specific circumstances and countries only.

thanks for the response so quick.
2 more questions if I may

1. would she ever need any document to prove her citizenship like we have a naturalisation certificate?

2. is it true that this child born outside the UK cannot pass on the citizenship to her children in the future if they are born outside the UK ?

HMPO could ask for parent's naturalisation certificate when child applies for passport renewal. It's a good idea to give child (when grown up) a certified copy of your naturalisation certificate, just in case (and keep your original in a safe place). Existing passport alone is not proof of citizenship.

Cannot pass on BC to children born outside the UK. Children born to her in the UK would automatically be British.

Just another question please.
I applied for the passport today and the documents they are asking are not impossible but really difficult to organise, considering none of the grandparents (of new born child) were born in the UK.
is it necessary to send their birth certificate and marriage certificate when i can prove myself that I am a naturalised british citizen?

Grandparents’ documents
Send all of the following for both maternal grandparents:
full birth or adoption certificate (showing both the child’s and parents’ details)
grandfather’s marriage certificate to your grandmother (if this applies)
And all of the following for both paternal grandparents:
full birth or adoption certificate (showing both the child’s and parents’ details)
grandfather’s marriage certificate to your grandmother (if this applies)

Not required if you are naturalised.

The form caters for ALL citizenship routes. The guide explains each route and documents needed clearly!

hi

any british parents who have successfully applied for their child passport (child born in Saudi Arabia), can you please confirm if you just sent the original birth certificate (in arabic) and the online printed copy of birth certificate from absher or you did a translation of the original birth certificate in english that comes in the post?

secondly, if you did the translation, did you get it stamped from british council in jeddah/riyadh or just certified translated copy.

regards

You would definitely need a translation of the birth certificate.
