Child Visa Expiry date confusion

Post by samkma » Sun Dec 14, 2025 4:17 pm

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can help clarify this situation.

My child was granted entry clearance as a dependant based on the mother’s Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). At the time, the father was in the UK on a different visa, so the child’s visa was issued to expire at the earlier of the two dates — which was the father's.

Since then, the father has switched to a dependant visa and his visa expiry is now aligned with the mother’s. Given this change, do both parents now need to make a new application to extend the child’s visa so it matches theirs?

Any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Yes, that is exactly what needs to be done otherwise the child will become an overstayer.

Should have added the child to the fathers dependent application, would have been the simplest way.

Children born abroad follow the pathway of the most restrictive parent (i.e. either the one with the most restrictive visa and/or the duration of the shorter of the two visas) and will be eligible to apply for ILR with the second/less-privileged parent. Plan ahead for that.
