Citizenship certificate delivered to someone else

Post by slayers_88 » Thu Sep 24, 2020 10:59 am

Hi. My citizenship certificate was sent via RoyalMail Signed Delivery but instead of delivering to me personally, RoyalMail gave it to a member of staff at reception in the building who failed to notify me and have lost my parcel.

My local council told me to contact Home Office. I phoned them, and they told me to email citizenship.support@homeoffice.gov.uk

I emailed them a week ago but I have received no reply, not even an automated reply to say they have got my email and will be back to me within X days, so I wonder whether anyone is actually monitoring that account. Has anyone successfully emailed that address and obtained a reply? If so, how long do they take to reply?

Also, has anyone got a similar problem? How did you solve it?

Thank you very much

Stay patient for a long time. This could take few good months now to get it replaced.

Start your preliminary attempt from local Royal mail depot where they hold it for a while before returning it to the sender as the package might have been handed to the postman by the building attendant.

Hi. Thanks for the replies. I opened an investigation RoyalMail escalations (over a few weeks. The package was "delivered" 2 months ago), who confirmed the package was delivered and not returned. The building attendant also admitted accepting the parcel but could not find it after :(

Ask the building attendant to keep searching. Or has s/he delivered it to someone else in the building by mistake?

Omg this sounds absolutely horrible I'm so sorry you have to go through this
Please write to your MP asap this is completely unacceptable behaviour on Royal Mail's and HO's part to have been so careless with such an important document that impacts your life

Just when you think you heard it all!!!

It's customary that receptionists in buildings sign for parcels and signed for mail. But are not supposed to lose. Normally they have a register where every piece of mail in recorded.

I can't understand how they lost it and why the person who received it by mistake didn't return it to the reception.

Well, just bite the bullet and apply for a replacement. I understand it's not your fault, but it's easiest way to get a replacement. No matter how Royal Mail escalate, they are not going to produce another certificate for you.

I will give Home Office another call tomorrow. I'm considering reporting it as lost and asking the Managing Agent company in my building to pay the £250 fee, as it's them who have lost it (and we pay them a lot in service charge every year so they collect parcels, which makes this even more frustrating).
