English language requirment with an expired US passport

Post by citizenshipqs » Wed Jun 25, 2025 1:49 pm

Hello,
I currently hold and ILR and would like to apply for citizenship.
For the English language proficiency, I have always used my American passport, however it has recently expired (under a year) and it will take me some time to renew for various reasons. Can I still submit it as evidence of my language proficiency?

Thank you

It is your US citizeship that exempts you. A passport is just a travel document.

You don't need a valid passport to apply for citizenship.

Hello,
Another two questions:
1. is the window to book a biometrics appointment after submitting the naturalisation form 45 days or 45 working days? the biometric biometric guidance suggests 45 working days (https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... nt__1_.pdf, p. 7), while the an guide mentions 45 days. Which to believe?

2. If I submit my application, then go on holiday abroad, Is it possible to book an appointment on the ukvcas website from abroad? I am asking because I'd need the appointment to be more than 28 days after the date of the application being submitted, hence can't set it before I go.
Thank you

it should be 45 working days. waiting 30 days to book it is a bit of a gamble. you would need to find a paid slot to be sure to meet the 45 days deadline (if possible, even though I think the limit is of 45 working days rather than calendar days, as it is slightly unclear, I would attend an appointment within 45 calendar days, better safe than sorry).

Thank you. Do you (or anyone else) happen to know if it is possible to book a ukvsca appointment from abroad (a few days after after submitting the application in the uk) or if the website would just not allow this?
Thank you

This option is not available for naturalization applicants resident in the UK.

Hi,
Looking at the required documents, I can see it is asking for "most recent tax year account statement and corresponding HMRC tax return as proof of self-employment". However, I am not self employed (I pay via PAYE). Can I just ignore this?

Ignore that as you are not self employed.
