extending visas in Germany

Hi

I have made an invitation for a family member to visit us in Munich. The invitation (einladung) was for 3 months (Oct-Dec 2004), but via a complex sequence of misunderstandings the visa was granted for just one moth (Oct 1 - Nov 1).

Is it in any way possible to get this visa extended to the full 3 months while in Germany? Or to apply for another type of visa (I am happy to be guarentor) that accomplishes the same thing

The visa was granted in Kiev (Ukraine) but to get an appointment there seems to take about 8 weeks. I am a UK citizen, my wife is Ukrainian. The visa is for her father to visit us.
