Does Settled Status still apply after Naturalisation?

Post by ffederico » Thu May 05, 2022 9:49 am

I'm an EU citizen and I recently obtained UK naturalisation. Before naturalisation I obtained the Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Am I allowed to travel to UK using the European ID Card (based on the fact that I had the Settled Status)?

I want to be sure I can still travel to Europe without my EU passport as I will have to send my EU passport as part of the UK passport application and the expected return time is 10 about weeks.

Thanks
Federico

ILR status is lost when you become a British citizen. This is because British citizens cannot have any form of leave as they are not subject to immigration control. To travel to the UK, you ideally either need to have a British passport or have a certificate of entitlement sticker in your current passport. This is particularly important for dual nationals whose other nationality does not allow them to fly to the UK without a valid visa.

EEA National ID card holders can still travel to the UK but they may face issues with entry:
You cannot use an EU, EEA or Swiss national ID card to enter the UK unless you:

have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man’s settlement schemes
have an EU Settlement Scheme family permit, or the equivalent from Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man
have a frontier worker permit
are an S2 Healthcare Visitor
are a Swiss national and have a Service Provider from Switzerland visa

In these cases, you can continue to use your national ID card to enter the UK until at least 31 December 2025.

However, as you are a British citizen you can travel to the UK border with the ID card and then simply show your naturalisation certificate to the officer. Note that as long as you prove you are British at the UK border, you will go through. No need for any other document

Thanks Zimba!

If I understand correctly, it doesn't make much sense to request the certificate of entitlement sticker (which costs few hundred Pounds) if I can just show my EU Id card and the naturalisation document.

Could I face issues if I also show to EU passport without the certificate of entitlement sticker?

Thanks

You can use either your EU ID card or passport but with the naturalisation certificate.
There's no issue due to not having a COE - you are British and have the right to enter the UK.
Note also the naturalisation cert is only for facilitating entry to the UK, it's not a travel document recognised elsewhere.

I was very clear that you do not need COE. I was also very clear that the naturalisation certificate can be used :?
