Post by John » Wed Jul 18, 2007 10:51 am

An MP secured the adjournment debate yesterday. If you click here you can read the debate.

Congratulations to Aldrin Quibuyen and his family!

Very happy at the outcome. At least Liam is not as difficult as people think and there is always the need to exercise discretion when the situation demands. Very happy for Al.

I don't know John. If you read Liam's response it doesn't really sound like he's offering much to the Quibuyen family. He's offered nothing more than to review the case but has not recinded the deportation order.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

This is a quote from the statement:
Therefore, this is a suitable case for discretion to be exercised. I propose to grant Mr. Quibuyen and his family a period of leave, to allow him and his employer to remedy the situation.

This clearly means that the family will be given a period of leave, during which they will be able to make the correct application, which will now be accepted as within the currency of existing leave. In other words, their immigration status will be regularised, as the Minister proposed.

I agree, it seems pretty clear to me, looking at Bryne's words, that they will be given leave to stay.
