Irish Passport Eligibility for new born

Post by NGIR » Tue Mar 02, 2021 1:38 pm

Hi all,

Hope everyone is keeping well and safe.

I am non-EU immigrant with indefinite leave to remain in UK (settlement) and I have been living in Northern Ireland for almost 2 yrs. My wife and I are expecting our baby in few weeks time.

My question is whether our new born will be eligible for Irish passport? or
I need to have lived here up to 4 yrs before his/her birth for the baby to be eligible for Irish Passport?

Thanks in advance for helping out with my question.

If your wife is not an Irish citizen, then you or your wife must have at least 3 full years of residence in Northern Ireland in the last 4 years at the time of your child's birth.
If it's less than 3 years, then your child will not qualify for Irish citizenship.

Since the UK is not a member of EU anymore, the subject of you not being an EU citizen does not make much difference in this regard.

*Irish or British.

I expect to see an uptick in birth tourism in NI in the coming years as British parents look to get an EU passport for their children.
