Multiple citizenship + passport waiting time

Hi all,

I have citizenship and a passport from Iceland (EEA), and citizenship without a passport in Bosnia.

I am applying for UK citizenship as I am illegible, but had a few questions.

Will I need to renounce my Bosnian citizenship, or does the UK allow multiple citizenships, i.e. more than 2 if the other countries also comply? Ideally I won't renounce my Bosnian one as it is a lengthy process that would cost me even more money.

Once my UK citizenship application is gone for consideration, will I be able to travel during the period of deliberation, or will I have to stay in the UK? Do they take my Icelandic passport and hold it until my UK citizenship application is approved? I am just concerned as I wanted to apply soon, but have a trip coming up in August and am not sure if I can travel with my Icelandic passport WHILE my UK citizenship application is being deliberated.

UK allows dual/multi nationalities, no issue for you.

You can travel. Bear in mind that you will receive a letter to enroll your biometric details at a Post Office and you have a short period of time to do this. If you apply using Nationality Checking Service (at a council office), you will get to keep your original documents and passport. If you apply by post on your own, you have to send your passport.

Do you have a document certifying your permanent residency?

Other people have also said the dual citizenship shouldn't be an issue, especially as the other counteries allow it, too.

In terms of applying for the passport, how long do applicants usually have to do this (after their confirmation of citizenship)?

In terms of a document certifying permanent residency, I don't need this as I am a citizen of an EEA country, have been working in London for almost 9 years as a tax payer and holder of an NI number.

In order to apply for British citizenship, it is now a requirement, since November 2015, for EU nationals to submit a document certifying permanent residence.

You will need to apply for PR document before you apply to naturalise. If you don't have one to send, your application will likely be refused and you will lose your fee.

Hey Char, thanks for the heads up, is it anywhere on the govt website stating this?

Additionally, do you mean the 'Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or something else? How do I get this proof of residence document?

Don't get mixed up with ILR.
If you are on EU migration journey its all about PR - and you need that confirmation of PR card if you have ambitions for privilege of citizenship.
Google the form.

Factor in a few months to get one.

And if not married to a BC you need to have had PR for 12 months before shooting for citizenship;
(not necessarily held the PR card itself for 12 months but certainly PR status).

PS There is no obligation to apply for a British passport.
If you want one its a separate step after successful naturalisation.

However, as I read on the below website, it does not mention that an EEA citizen has to apply for this card. It only talks about family members of EEA citizens so it's a bit confusing as to whether an EEA national actually needs the card?

This is why you need to know what you are doing - don't make assumptions or simply hope for the best.

The Home Office is a government department, do not expect joined-up thinking.
When you get to review the citizenship information you will see you need a mandatory PR card.

If you haven't done so then suggest you check the citizenship application form & guidance.

As a general rule, you should always be looking ahead to the next step in your migration journey to see what will be required.
Then plan for it.

Its no good being from an A8 country and forgetting to register for WRS.
Or being a student and not having CSI.
Or being a student and working illegally.
Five or ten years later you might find you need some of these things (or wish you hadn't done certain things)..

You have found the PR card information webpage.
It is not the citizenship webpage & so it doesn't tell you all the reasons why you (anyone) may need such a card.

Not sure how it works in your country but here there's a lot of 'left-hand' not knowing what 'right-hand' is doing.

I completely agree and this is why I am on the journey of research at this time...I simply came here to ask the specific question I originally did, and I haven't yet finished investigating every single detail of what I need to apply. It's just that something new has come up that I have obviously not seen in my reading materials yet.

It's a huge investment financially, mentally and generally so of course I am going to check everything before I actually apply, to ensure I am doing the right steps and providing the correct documentation. It's only te beginning of it for me, so there is a lot to read.
