My mother is a British Citizen. I was born in the US. Unfortunately, she did not register me for dual nationality when I was a minor. Is there any way to get permission to stay in the UK through UK ancestry without being a Commonwealth Citizen?

Historically women could not pass their citizenship to any children born outside the UK but I believe this has changed.

Law has changed from 1982 onwards with regard to passing a British citizenship by mother's descent.

There may be hope for you. A new immigration and asylum act has just received royal assent. As part of that act, an amendment was discussed that would give British citizenship to anyone born to a British mother between 1961 and 1983. (see http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld199900/ldhansrd/pdvn/lds02/text/21031-05.htm ). As far as I know the new act has yet to be officially published, so you will have to wait for it to be published to be certain the amendment is included (should be published soon).

After it is published how long before the law is implemented? Is there any set process or time period for this or will the HO start processing applications since it is law....
I think the law should be published and become available as from tomorrow - 2weeks from Royal Assent but let's see if that happens
