How were you offered your first job in UK?

Were you interviewed over the phone from the overseas or you had to land in UK in order to show up on the face to face interview?

Who got the job while being abroad over the phone?

Did you apply for perms or contracts?

Was your technical interview tough or easy?
http://www.reed.co.uk has a nice feature showing how many people have applied for each opening.
It seems market in UK is not so bad when nobody has applied for 20% of openings and just 1 person have applied for 30% of openings - the statistics were made when typing C++ in a search field at midnight of UK time for the past day.

Currently in US a recruiter who posted an opening on the Web usually receives from 40 to 150 CVs for a single opportunity (expert level).

In my case was an interview over the phone then I was called in the UK for a face-to-face interview. I have got a contract for one year and then a permanent post. I must mention that I am a teacher and to get a permanent post you must have the QTS (qualified teacher status). This can be obtained through different training programmes and once you get it you can get a permanent post. I believe that if your profession is not a regulated one (teacher, doctor, lawyer, accountant), you can get a permanent post from the very first beginning.

Teachers are an exceptional case as are Social Workers in UK. Both fields have critical shortages and the UK has been recruiting heavily in North America for candidates.

I'm in University here in Toronto and I can tell you they are here every month offering all kinds of bonuses and perks for new gradutates to go over and teach or do social work.

Hi Elisa,
I am interested in what you wrote about WPs being issued to bring in teachers into the UK. Can you please provide further information on that - website link etc .I am a visa national and currently in the USA also on a work permit. I would like to move to the UK and teaching is a good option. I am not currently a teacher, never have actually, my training is in Engineering though don’t have much experience in it.

Well I don't have any links to send you though I'm sure if you did a search on UK teaching you might find some. My info is based on the recruitment officials that have been at the University I'm attending every month for the last year. They have the same booth and pamplets month after month that are recruiting recent graduates from the Teaching program here so I don't know how you would do without a Teaching certificate. I know in Canada if you have a BA in say History, English you can go back to University for 12 months and get your teaching certificate. You can also go to UK and do their one year program although it's very expensive - 16k Canadian.

University just started up again so I expect they should be on site within the next few weeks so if I see the booth again I'll try to get some information for you if I can and post if here.
