Indian nationals were among the largest recipients of British work permits in 2002, a landmark year in which more work permits than any year since the Second World War

According to research published on Saturday by the Office for National Statistics, there were 129,041 permits issued in 2002, compared with 115,800 in the previous year.

In terms of occupation, the group that was issued the most work permits was the information and communications technology (ICT) sector, and the research confirms South Asia's dominance of this field with 78 per cent of the computer programmer applications granted coming from India.

According to Home Office figures analysed by the Migration Research Unit of University College London, the figure for 2002 represents the post-war high in an annual score that fell to a low of about 15,000 in the early 1980s. ( Is UK the next big job destination for Indians after the US? )

Given the shortage of health professionals in Britain, the highest number of permits issued in 2002 were issued in the health and medical services sector, followed by computer services and administration and administration/managerial services.

James Clarke, a research officer at the Migration Research Unit, told the media: "Because of the bursting of the dotcom bubble there's been a decline in the expansion of the ICT sector, but it's still a growing sector."
