Hi, I'm a recent American Finance graduate with 6 months accounting experience under my belt in London. I have been looking into the independent skilled migrant procedure and believe I might qualify IF I also gain a professional qualification through CPA Australia to make up for my lack of experience (supposedly this qualification cancels out the work experience quota). Although my degree is in Finance, I have completed 9 out of 12 of the courses required to join CPA Australia. (They only require you to have 9 courses so it looks like it could be a go

It seems too good to be true that I, a recent grad, would qualify under this independent skilled migration thing, am I missing something here? What's the catch?

HI

You are not missing out on anything, believe it or not - Accountants are highly in demand in Australia so they are trying to "recruit" as many recent grads as possible. It might be worth even waiting until you do have the 12 months experience and then applying for the ICAA assessment, for which I believe you would gain a suitable assessment, and then apply for the visa on that basis (i.e. without having obtained CPA membership).

The visa will take over a year to process anyway so it might be worth waiting until you have that further experience to apply. But then again, it is up to you - if you feel that taking the additional 3 courses is easier than waiting another 6 months to apply, then by all means!

Please let me know if we can assist you with this!

Thanks Elfa!

So you're saying that a degree plus 12 months experience should be enough?
Do I need to be outside of Australia from the time I apply to the time I receive this permit? Because I was thinking of doing the Council Exchange in Australia for 4 months starting this summer.

CPA will normally advise to take additional studies in following subjects, since they are subjects are primarily local:

- Business Finance
- Australian Taxation Law
- Australian Company Law
- Comtemporary Accounting Issue (Theory)

However there is no hard and fast rules that additional studies are required.

I had applied for skill assessment and CPA advised me to additional studies for the above subjects.

1. I had contacted universities for distance education, however the response was not encouraging.

2. The course fees for 4 subjects is more than the migration costs.

3. To pass the subjects, it would take more than a year, since the above subjects exams are in different semester.

So you can have your skill assessed.

Hi

I think Santosh is referring to CPA's requirements in such a manner that in order for one to practice as an Accountant in Australia, you must take those two Australian taxation/company law courses, which can be done in Australia.

London Chic = I would suggest you get your skills assessed by the ICAA - you should have already met most of the requirements for getting licensed as an accountant in Australia as well. Also, yes, you do need to be outside of Australia when the visa is granted. However, you could apply now, go to Australia for the summer, and return to the UK before your visa is granted. I think that would be feasible.

Hope this helps!

Hello Elfa,

I do not mean to "practice" as a Accountant. There are 4 Nominated Occupation list available which a person with finance background can apply:

1. Accountant
2. Accountant - Corporate Treasurer
3. Accountant - External Auditor
4. Accountant - Internal Auditor

In all the cases, they are employment.

Elfa, can you advise me on following:

I had my skills assessed for Occupation "Accountant 2211-11. CPA has advise me to undertake studies in 4 subjects.

Can I apply with skill assessment result for PR Or do I have to complete studies and then apply?

Can I apply for different Occupation, say Accountant - Corporate Treasurer ?

To which authorities, ERP financial Consultant should apply for skill assessment, if education qualification is finance and ERP certification is SAP ?

Hi Santosh

As long as the letter from CPAA states that your qualifications have been assessed as "suitable for migration" under ASCO COde 2211-11, then you can apply for the PR visa.

If the letter does not state this, then you may need to undertake those courses mentioned prior to applying. Unless you have been working as a Corporate Treasurer it is unlikely you would be assessed as suitable for this occupation.

As an ERP Financial Consultant you would still have to apply for one of nominated occupations the ICAA or CPAA are in charge of assessing. That is a difficult one though since all of the Finance occupations (i.e. FInancial Analyst, etc.) are only worth 40 points and the Accountancy occupations are worth 60. I would presume you would need those 60 points to pass the points test.
