Hi Elfa & Others,

I am a software engineer working in California, age 26, with an MS in Electrical Engineering from a U.S. university. I am planning to start the application process for Permanent residence in Australia through an immigration agency. I have a few questions/concerns. If you could help clarify the following, I would much appreciate it.

1) My Masters degree is in Electrical Engineering but I work for a software company as a developer. I have total full-time work experience of 28 Months in IT. Although, my degree says Electrical Engr, like most American universities, the curriculum comprises of computer engineering and computer science courses. Can the clash beween my degree name and the nominated job be a problem at any stage during the application process ?

2) If I get the PR, what is the time frame within which I am required to enter Australia ? How long do I have to stay there to maintain the PR status ?

3) I would like to sponsor my Mother's PR later. How soon can I do this after getting my PR ? What sort of financial guarantee am I required to give for this ??

4) As I said above, I have only 2.3 years of work exp. What are my chances ? Or is it worth waiting till September 2002, when I will complete 3 Yrs of work.

Thanks for your patience.

regards,
Sriv

Hi Sriv

I got your Immigration Appraisal form today, so I should be providing you with an assessment by MOnday, latest.

In response to your specific questions:

1) Yes, this could be a problem with your skills assessment. If you do not have a degree in an IT-related field (i.e. in Applied Science (Computing), Applied Science (Computer Science), Applied Science (Information Systems), Business (Data Processing) (old), Business (Electronic Data Processing) (old), Business (Information Systems), Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering, Information, Information Systems, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Software Engineering) then you can not qualify straight out for a standard ACS skills assessment. You would need to take the Recognition of Prior Learning skills assessment, for which we advise candidates having at least 5 years of varied and extensive IT work experience prior to applying...

2) You need to enter Australia initially about 6-9 months from the date the visa is granted. You can then travel in and out of Australia for up to five years, whereby the PR visa must be renewed

3) At least two years - you will have to provide pay slips and other financial documentation to "assure" and sponsor her application

4) I will provide you with a full assessment shortly, but briefly, I would advise you to wait until you have 5 years of IT work experience before applying

Best regards

Elfa
