Opening a joint account with someone abroad

Post by DeLa Soul » Fri Jun 29, 2018 8:58 pm

Hi all,

new here. been reading and researching here since Tuesday, but caint seem to find an answer to my question.

1.
My younger brother is applying for a Tier 4 student visa. Now... I`ve got bank account and cash ISAs with £27Grand in it.

And I`ve been trying to either a) open a joint bank account for the financial evidence or b) convert my bank account into a joint account.

All banks seem to require the account joiner appear in the local bank branch to open the bank account. Problem is... how can my younger brother appear at my local NatWest bank branch, when he in abroad and doesn’t have a Visa?

2. Sorry, I haven’t been up to date with UK student visa laws the past 10 years, but... wasn’t there a time someone (a private person) could sponsor a student? I caint seem to find anything about that on the GOV.UK website anymore... strange.

Cheers and thanks.

Dela

Read page 44 onwards on the financial requirements https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... pdf#page45

Your brother needs ID to open a UK account, so it’s not going to be possible to do this from abroad.

You can’t sponsor him, only his university can.

Your only option is to transfer the required funds into his bank account (ensure that the bank is ‘recognised’ by the UKVI), all the info is in the guidances notes link I’ve provided above.
My comments do not constitute immigration advice, if in doubt consult an immigration adviser/solicitor

If you are giving him the money for his fees and living costs, why not just transfer it to him?

Alternatively, pay his tuition fees direct to the university and transfer the money for his living costs to him.
I do not give immigration advice. I refer you to Immigration Rules, guidance, other online content and to your sponsor.
