Pakistani passport expiring

My wife is currently living with me in the UK on a spouse visa.

Her Pakistani passport is expiring in Feb 2016.

We want to go on holiday to Europe in September, which will mean when she returns to UK from the holiday her passport will only be valid for 4 or 5 months. I keep reading online that a foreign passport must be valid for at least 6 months to enter the UK but I can't find any mention of this on a reliable website.

Can anyone confirm this? Will my wife need to get her passport renewed before our holiday in September?

She can re-enter the UK as long as her passport is valid. It does not have to have at least 6 months validity.

Do you know if the same applies if she travels outside Europe?

I asked an immigration officer at Liverpool airport and he said you usually require at least 6 months passport validity to travel outside Europe, but he also said you may be OK.

Basically, she is travelling to Pakistan with ~ 5 months validity left on her passport. When she returns to the UK she will have ~ 3 months validity left on her passport.

My research online tells me she'll be OK as Pakistan (and UK) don't require 6 months passport validity for entry - they just require a valid passport (she is a Pakistani passport holder).

Also, she is flying on Etihad Stupid and I can't find any rulings for passport validity in the terms and conditions.

Does anyone know the rulings for sure?

So our plan is to travel on the current passport and renew it when she returns to the UK.
