Permanent Residence card expired

Hello

My wife obtained permanent residence through her step father utilising his treaty rights back in 2007. Her card has expired recently and we are due to go on holiday. Is she able to leave and re-enter the UK with an expired card?

My understanding is the card is just for ease of use rather than a requirement and obviously she has her actual letter granting permanent residency in the first place, her expired card in her passport and we could take our marriage certificate, bills from the last 3 years showing she's been resident here etc. if they wanted to check anything but just wanted to find out if anyone knows the rules on this? (Ideally a link)

What the Stupid seem to have to work on is a statement that, "Visa is not required for passengers who hold permanent residence in the UK provided they return to the UK within 2 years of their last departure."

It's possible that the documentation you mentioned, if you meant '8+ years' and not merely '3 years', would work, but I fear that the practical answer is 'no'. The problem is to reach British Immigration. If your wife is a visa national, she is unlikely to be able to reach British Immigration. British Immigration is only safely accessible from the Common Travel Area (UK plus Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands) and the Schengen zone.

She should apply to have it renewed. The renewal cost 65. The rights still exist, but as mentioned, airline's may have difficulty permitting her to board.

Obie, if PR is a biometric card, would it be a simple BRP(RC) application @ £56?? If granted in 2007, would it have been the paper card type of PR?

It will have to be a BR card as the law has changed.

The person will need to fill section 1, 4 , 17 and 18 of EEA (PR) and pay £65 .
