US Citizen and UK resident - DUAL Citizenship Questions

Post by ABC2014 » Fri Oct 31, 2014 6:13 pm

Hi All,
My son is US Citizen by birth and hold US passport. He also holds permanent residence (settlement) is UK and living here for past few years. He will be turning 18 soon and continue to live and study here few more years into university until he decides where to live/work.

I am considering to apply for UK Citizenship and wanted get a second opinion about this. Can you please advise what are benefits for having a dual citizenship - both US and UK thru naturalization.

Please elaborate on this and finally say should we apply for UK nationalization ?

Thanks & Regards
ACB

There are no benefits to speak of other than his own children can be born outside the UK and acquire BC. Some (very few) high security professional situations require candidates to be EEA citizens but, otherwise, a permanent resident of the UK has the same social rights as British citizens. Most US Citizens living in the UK, in fact, choose not to naturalize because of this. However, if he were to leave the UK for two years, he would lose his status so that may be something to consider.

As you already know, as a US citizen, Uncle Sam will tax his worldwide income regardless of being actually resident inside mainland USA, but only those sums in excess of a certain threshold.

ABC2014,

Get his citizenship before rules change. It opens up a larger playground of opportunities. He can pick and choose whereever he wants to work and if he plans to travel the world it will be an advantage to have both. Many gates will open up.

Last but not least ILR is valid only for as long as he remains in UK and if there is a gap of 2 years it will be wasted. I am a British Citizen in USA and plan to settle int he US. If you really look at it the British Citizenship is only useful for the red passport and travel. The economy ,opportunities, mind sets etc are dimunishing by the day.
cheers

Hi,Looks like you have good grasp of the subject.
We whole family husband and wife just got british citizenship and in one months moving to US may be permanently.
Twist of the story our green card sticker is on previous indian passport and now we have uk passport and going to us should we go on Indian passport or use uk passport. we have green card since last 8 years and managed to worked and maintained green card ,this year alone we have been visited two times last time in in August/14.
what do you say.
Can we use 3 months grace period to surrender indian passport and use indian passport to go to usa.
Thank you in advance.
