There is more than one answer to this questions. Legally you don't have prove anything. However, the BIA holds the opinion that you have to satisfy the national immigration rules if you apply from outside of Europe. In this case, you have to show that your accommodation is not overcrowded. Basically they want to avoid that you move into an already full house. Booking a hotel and going from there should be fine, as long as you can demonstrate sufficient means.
