Stamp 1g - health insurance

Post by binnom » Wed Sep 11, 2019 6:12 pm

Hello,

Hope somebody could give us some guidance regarding the following problem:

I'm a Stamp 4 holder (through Critical Skills permit), my wife is on Stamp 3 now, but we were about to apply for Stamp 1g. We had all documents on hands, however, Garda who was accepting our documents demanded a receipt for a health insurance policy that will expire in September/October 2020.

We do have private insurance through my employer, however, it will expire on May 2020. It is a group policy, we cannot extend my wife's insurance, we only can buy her own for 1400 Euro, which sounds incredibly disturbing.

I was wondering if anybody else experienced such a demand, and how did they handle that.

Thanks!

You can get private health insurance for monthly payment as little as 35€. Check VHI. Once you get gnib renewed you can cancel it. It's not ideal but works nevertheless.

Entry level insurance costs around 35-50 euro a month. 1400 Euro a year can get you one of the best insurance covers but it’s certainly not a requirement.

I am paying 45 euros per month and it's not the basic one. I am through VHI.

The problem here is that we DO have expensive insurance - 1300 per person per year. I just flabbergasted that they ignore that fact, and demand us to purchase the second one, just because they can demand. Very frustrating.

Yeah, that is a good trick, however, the cancellation fee would be around 200-300 probably. We all probably would appreciate it if somebody could share their own experience of canceling VHI health insurance.
