Adopted: Am I eligible for citizenship?

Post by carson55 » Thu Nov 28, 2019 11:45 am

Hi!

I am wondering if I am eligible to apply for Irish citizenship (or maybe I already am!).

I was born in Belfast to an Irish mother in the early 1950's. Shortly after, I was adopted by a British couple in London, and grew up there. I currently hold a British passport.

Do you think that this automatically makes me an Irish citizen, and if not, how do you think I should apply? I have all the paperwork proving that I was born in Belfast (original birth certificate), I have the adoption certificate proving the link between Belfast and London, and my new birth certificate (from London).

Thank you in advance for any advice given.

Kind regards!

If you have the long form birth certificate which says that you were born in Belfast, that alone should be sufficient for applying for an Irish passport.
