Blank surname on visa application

Dear everyone, I am from a state in India which has a different convention of names. The family names are patronymic and are usually written as <Initial (first letter of father's name)> <First Name>. My parents passport gives the same name (<Initial> <First Name>) in the Given name of the passport while leaving the surname as blank.

But while applying UK visa I am not able to leave the surname field blank. Has anyone encountered this same problem. Please advise how you applied for the visa. Many thanks

So you mean if your full name is:

Aishwarya Rai

They would write in the passport:

R. Aishwarya

As first-name and leave the family name blank without ever writing it in full anywhere?

Yes, exactly that is the case with my parents' passport. It is a common naming convention in my state (Tamilnadu).

Most older people still follow this and have the name on all their identity documents which is then used on the passport too

Hope other people would have solutions.

Possibly you need to ask your local authorities if they can do something. Because it's hard to get a visa and also travel with a passport that has just your first-name in it.

Put N/A to keep the application on move.

Put first name in surname as well. Thats what i have done in previous visit applications for my relatives.

Example: first name: Abc xyz
Surname in application: Abc xyz

Hi Harv I got the visa by using the given name on both name and surname field in the visa application. Thanks for your help
