When can someone apply for irish citizenship?

Post by mrquest » Thu Sep 30, 2021 1:30 pm

Hi,

the stuff with the days is a little bit confusing. Example : Living in Ireland since 01. January 2022 and married to an irish citizen since 01. January 2024. When can the person apply for citizenship? Thanks

There are 2 routes. You either apply on your own merit or apply on the basis of marriage to an Irish citizen. You choose either of them. They cannot be combined. The first requires 5 years of reckonable residence in the Republic of Ireland, and the second requires 3 years of reckonable residence on the island of Ireland.

Hi littlerr,

thanks for your help but i already know this. The question was when exactly :-) Example : Living in Ireland since 01 January 2022, married in 01 January 2024. When is the earliest day to apply? 01 January 2025 or 01 January 2027? Thank you.

You question was not "when exactly", you asked "When can the person apply for citizenship".

Your hypothetical "someone" is jumping way ahead of themselves to ask for a precise date. No fortune teller on here to know what your "someone's" individual circumstances will be in the future regarding residence, employment, family, absences etc, all to be considered. You were given a perfect response on this. Read the guidance for reckonable residence and utilise a calculator. "Stuff" is not difficult.

I think my answer was quite clear - you cannot mix the two options. You choose one option and that's it.

You either apply on your own merit, which is 5 years from 2022, or you apply based on marriage, which is 3 years from 2024.

Yes the "Stuff" is not difficult but i saw this here and it was a little bit confusing.

"""I’m an Australian citizen and have been legally resident in Ireland since 2001. In 2002 I married an Irish citizen. Can I now apply for Irish citizenship?

Yes. As you have been married to an Irish citizen for over 3 years, and have enough “reckonable residence” in the island of Ireland, you can apply to become an Irish citizen through marriage."""

With "now we have 2005 can i apply?" everything would have been clarified. Thank you too.

100% clear. Thank you for your time.
