Renew british passport

Post by VEERARMAAN » Sat Jun 21, 2025 7:23 am

I got my british passport through descent and I am currently living in India. Next year is the expiry date. My question is am I eligible to extend it for next 10 years? And for how many subsequent years can I extend it?

Why do you believe you will have an issue applying for a renewal? There is no limit on how many renewals you can apply for!!

Simply apply for a new passport, which will be valid for 10 years.

Note a British passport is not an immigration document. It's a travel document.
You just apply for a new one when due. Your British citizenship doesn't expire with the passport.

As I said I got British Passport(BP)through descent. I have been living in India since I received my BP. I heard from somewhere that as I received BP through descent, I can extend my BP only once for 10 years and not subsequent years. Please clarify.

Never heard of this "restriction" - do you have an official source for this?

You are British and entitled to apply for a passport - the only issue with "by descent" is that your children born outside the UK won't be British automatically. There's no such thing as time-limited citizenship...

There is no such restriction.

I think you are confusing it with the rule that British citizenship (which some people call "British passport") can only be passed on one generation outside the UK.

The main restriction that apply to British citizens by descent is that they can't automatically pass on their British citizenship to children born outside the UK. So if any child is born to you outside the UK, that child won't be a British citizen and that child can't apply for a British passport.

You can apply for British passports from abroad for the rest of your life, as can any children born to you in the UK. But any children born to you outside the UK can't.
