Some questions re: visa expiry and appointments

First time posting here. Greatly appreciate your help. Current finishing the second stint of leave to remain (second 2.5 years), applying for ILR on the 5-year spousal route.

1. Can I book an appointment for the biometrics and document checks after the visa has expired? Provided I have done the Life in the UK Test and online gov.uk application?

2. Does the UKVCAS require an in person document check?

3. Are signed letters from employers required alongside pay slips to meet the income threshold requirement? Normal PAYE employee.

4. Do you need to complete the Life in the UK Test first before submitting the gov.uk application?

5. Is there an IHS surcharge this time around?

6. How long is the gap between getting ILR and applying for British citizenship?

1. Yes. The date of application is the date you submit it online. If you apply for a new application before visa expiry, you get section 3C protection. This means your visa gets extended automatically after its expiry date until you get a decision. The Biometrics date does not affect anything and does not matter.

6. If you are married to a British citizen, you can apply immediately after ILR. Otherwise, you must have been settled (ILR) for at least one year before applying. There are other requirements that apply under the nationality law.
