transit visa for hungary

Post by rogerroger » Mon Dec 25, 2006 4:08 pm

Hello

I am planning a trip to cairo(egypt), the flight is Malev hungarian Stupid.

I guess i as a british citizen dont need a transit visa for Hungary. does my wife holding an indian passport(with indefinite leave to remain) need a transit visa for hungary. our stay in budapest is for 1 and a 1/2 hour.

if my wife does require a transit visa(our stay in budapest is for 2 hours), can she get the visa at budapest airport?

i know with france transit visa has not been a problem, i dont know if hungary would have similar laws since it is a member of the schengen agreement.

Roger, if this webpage is to be believed, whilst a visa is required by a citizen of India to enter Hungary "for real", one is not required merely to transit through an airport in Hungary.

However for confirmation, why don't you phone the Malev office in the UK and ask them for confirmation. They are sure to know.

thanks for the info John

i did a google and came across this
http://www.hunconsydney.com/vizum/vizuminfo.htm

for an AIRPORT TRANSIT VISA “A”-type: it can be single or double. It entitles the holder to enter the international zone of the airport and to stay there until the departure of the flight to the state of destination.

Special requirement: It is required to have the visa of the country of destination or other permit authorising the stay of the foreigner (if not exempt from the visa requirement) and airline ticket showing confirmed reservation. Important! Australian passport holders and nationals of most countries are exempt of this regulation! Please check with the nearest Hungarian Embassy or Consulate to verify if you are required a visa for transiting at Budapest International Airport. Airport transit visas cannot be issued at the border (International Airport).

anybody knows if my wife needs an airport transit visa?

i checked out the link that you provided and this para does mean that my wife does not need an airport transit visa.

(e) persons continuing their journey to a third country within 24 hours, provided not leaving the airport and holding valid onward tickets and documentation. However, nationals of the following countries must obtain a transit visa, unless destined for, or holding a valid permit of residence issued by, an EU state, Canada, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland or the USA: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Congo (Dem Rep), Congo (Rep), Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Liberia, Nigeria, Pakistan, The Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Taiwan and holders of Palestinian documents.

the UK is part of the EU, correct?
since my wife does hold a UK residence permit, so she does satisfy two of the criteria in section e, correct?

i will call up malev and ask them too

Does your wife have one of those nationalities? No ... so why do you think she might need a transit visa?
