Travel abroad while nationality application in process

Post by srik7sindia » Sun Feb 20, 2022 10:32 am

We applied for UK naturalisation and attended the Biometric appointment on 22nd December 2021.
We are in a position where we have to travel to India in the month of April 2022. We have valid Indian passports (Validity till 2028) and UK Biometric Card (Valid with Indefinite Leave to remain till 2024). I understand that we are allowed to travel out of the UK and back while the naturalisation application is pending. We have a son who has learning disabilities and has to make extensive preparations before we make any travel arrangements. We are worried and would like some guidance on the following

-What if we book our tickets for April 2022 and we receive an outcome from the UK Home office before April or while we are in India?
- Would we be still allowed to travel out of the UK and into the UK with valid Indian passports and valid UK Biometric.

Thanks a lot in advance

You are only British once you attend your citizenship ceremony. It is not from approval letter date.

Thanks a lot for the message. Just to clarify and for me to understand better does the process flow through as below
- Receiving an email from the Home office if approved.
- Me getting in touch with the council for the ceremony (is there is a time limit from receiving the email to by which we have to contact the council to request for the ceremony)
- Council arranges ceremony (In case I am stuck in India during the time of receiving the email can delay the ceremony. Is there a time limit for the ceremony to happen from the date of receiving the email)

Really appreciate the advice. I am hesitant to book the tickets.

21 days/3 weeks from the date of the approval email.

The citizenship ceremony should be held within three months from the date of the approval email. That has currently been relaxed to six months due to the pandemic, but as the pandemic rules are relaxed globally, that will likely revert back to the three months pre-pandemic norm.
