Marriage Reconciliation and U.S. Spouse Visa Expiration

My husband (UK) citizen and myself (U.S.) citizen had a falling out and he returned to the UK 2 years ago. We are reconciling and wonder what shall we do now that his U.S. Visa has expired 3/2017. Do we have to do a new Visa application or can we salvage his expired one with explanation? He is living currently in UK and I in the states. We did not separate legally or divorce. Any help would be so appreciated. Thank you.
