Do I have dutch nationality?

Post by maxadc » Wed Jul 15, 2015 12:45 pm

Hi,

First post here :)

I live in the United Kingdom. My father is a citizen of the United Kingdom, and my mother is a citizen of the Netherlands. I was born in the United Kingdom in 1989. My parents were married when I was born. I hold a United Kingdom passport through birth. I have never resided in the Netherlands.

I would like to hold a passport from the Netherlands in addition to my United Kingdom passport.

From the information above, do I already have Dutch nationality? If so, what would I need to bring to prove this when making a first time application for a Dutch passport? Also, am I right in thinking that because I have lived in the UK since birth, I would not need to give up my UK nationality and passport when applying for a Dutch passport?

Thanks!

Wikipedia says
A person born on or after 1 January 1985 to a married Dutch father or mother, or an unmarried Dutch mother, is automatically a Dutch subject at birth. It is irrelevant where the child is born.
The rules about the loss of Dutch nationality are given further down the page. It seems that loss of Dutch nationality can be prevented in your case by applying for a Dutch passport before you reach 28 years of age. But I am going by Wikipedia.
