Hello All,

Can a child born in India (U18) hold both India / British Nationality?

At the time of birth both parents were Indian nationals. Child born Indian.

If both parents were to become a naturalised british, can the child still have both nationality until 18?

No as for the child to become British you have to formally apply to register the child as British, meaning they lose their Indian citizenship on date of registration as British.

The rule you are quoting is only relevant to children who are Bron to one parent who is British and the other is an Indian citizen.

It doesn't apply in the circumstances you describe.

Child was born in Uk in February 2021, father British and mother Indian
Birth certificate and British passport obtained already, how to register birth in HCI ??
Is it under section 5(1)(D) of citizenship.
Pls help us explaining the steps involved and recent timeline pls

What is the issue with just getting an OCI?

I read somewhere if one parent is British and one parent is Indian ,child eligible for both nationality rights. So wanted to double check if someone had already got this way and steps involved. Thanks

The child can retain both nationalities if they are born with both nationalities, such as if one parent was a British citizen and the other parent was an Indian citizen on the date of birth of the child.

If one of the parents became a British citizen later and want to register the child as a British citizen later on, the child automatically loses Indian citizenship due to Indian citizenship law.
