Bank Loan for an HSMP Visa holder?

Post by AnkurS » Sun Oct 14, 2007 7:56 pm

Hi,

I just wanted to know if it is possible for an HSMP holder to get a bank loan just 6 months after landing in UK? This loan would be to pay for the tuition fees in one of the universities in UK and the course itself would run for 2 years full time.

Any help on this is greatly welcome.

Regards,
Ankur

By the way, does anyone of you have in the past enrolled/have plans to enroll in full-time course at any university while being on an HSMP? or for that matter you know someone who did this or plans to do so now? When I said bank loans I meant student loans for graduate studies!

Again, any help is greatly welcome :)

If you want to be a student full-time, you need to get a student visa. No point being on HSMP and studying full-time, I'm sure there's something wrong with that. You certainly won't be able to get your HSMP extended if you don't meet the 75 points again, so do be careful.

As for student loans...I only know of those given to people with ILR/PR or other permanent status (or those non-EEA on family permits here for 3 or more years). I doubt a bank would give you a student loan...99% of the time international students pay their own way, or get a scholarship.

Ankur,

For part time enrollment or any further financial aspects/funding of studies when you are new to UK, you are better off sorting out the loan in your home country itself and take the money along with you rather than trying to arrange a loan here.

For a short-term unsecured loan, your credit history is more important than your immigration status. If you've only been resident in the UK 6 months it doesn't make a difference whether you've got a British passport or are only here on a student visa, the bank will objectively look at your credit history and your ability to repay the loan.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.
