Spelling Mistake in Naturalisation Certificate

Dear All,

I got my naturalisation certificate and their is a spelling mistake in my maiden name. Its only one alphabet. Instead of "m" they have written "n" in my (maiden)first name. Can someone help with few question regarding the same.

1) Do I still need to fill the payment sheet while I send the certificate back for their mistake. Or just the covering letter will do. I have got a copy of my AN form, so I am going to send them the copy of the page where I have written the name right. Also, I am going to send them the copy of my passport where the name was spelt correctly. So, its definitely their mistake. But I am wondering whether they will still charge me for correcting that.

2) Is it OK to apply for passport first and then do the correction. What do you guys suggest?

1. If you completed the from correctly, then it is HO's error and they need to correct the certificate. There should be no charge.

2. No, if you apply for a passport with the incorrect certificate and a foreign passport and the names don't match, HMPO will likely reject your application.

When you say 'maiden name', I am assuming you mean your normal surname and that you don't have another/married name.

Not clear which name on your naturalisation certificate is incorrect, current name or previous (maiden name) as the certificate has space for both (although not always filled in by HO).

Anyway here is an example in which a member reported having a similar HO error corrected FOC:

The spelling mistake is for the Name at Birth.

My full name after marriage is Neelam (husband first Name) (Husband Surname)

My Name at birth was Neelam (father's first Name) (Father's surname)

Instead they wrote Neelan (father's first Name) (Father's surname)

Simple mistake really. Married name is spelt correct "Neelam" with "m". Brith name is spelt wrong "Neelan" with "n". Got it.

So looks like a typical typo.

I am going to send it back with my application copy and passport copy. This should suffice, right?

I just realised that my Indian Passport do not have Maiden Name/Birth Name section. Is it OK if I send my old passport for this. Togather with the AN form printout.

Old passport is really old. I was a child when I got that passport. At that time they used to give passport with a validity of 20 years. So I never changed it. Only changed it after Marriage.

Birth certificate may be another option.
It's up to HO what they will accept.

Just an update on this. I sent my naturalisation certificate back to them on 7th Jan. I included a special delivery envelope with it.

HO sent it back on 26th using my special delivery envelope. Just a point to be noted here, no fees was requested for rectifying their mistake.
