BRP non-return within 5 (!!!) days fines

Post by GreenEyesRedHair » Fri Feb 12, 2021 6:49 pm

Hi,
I've had my citizenship ceremony on 27 Jan this year.
There was an ERROR (mistype of one letter) in my last name on the certificate. So I sent it back immediately.
Now to the problem. I did not realise I have only 5 days to return my BRP and was going to keep it until I receive my new correct Naturalisation Certificate. So I kept it until 9 Feb and then realised it's no use to me as it is not valid when I am a citizen, and I better send it back to the HO. So I sent it back on the 9th Feb and they received it on 11th Feb.
And only just I've found out that I have only got 5 days to return it!!!
It's a panic station here.... Are they going to fine me now? Has anyone had been fined and how would they tell me about the fine? How would I know I owe them money? Is there any chance to check it online?
BTW: I've not received the replacement of my certificate yet.

I would say chances of any fines for this especially during COVID are slim to none. I think the main goal of this rule is to prevent people from having two IDs with different status at the same time. Since you've already sent it back and didn't try to cross borders with it or anything, in my opinion you will be just fine.

I honestly don't know how this could happen to me, I always fill everything in myself, make sure everything is spotless. I've had an invitation for the Naturalisation Ceremony from HO and there was no mention of 5 days limit. I was wondering how many days I had and was assuming that if I have not got my corrected certificate in my hands, it is NOT classed that I've received my certificate, bcs if someone wanted to see a proof i can stay in the UK, i can't show them anything.
I will leave a link to that letter from HO. No 5 days mention...

PS: I hope as you said, it's going to be alright! I don't want any surprise fines!!

You're panicking for no reason. There is no issue with the slight delay.

Not one single member on the forum has event reported being fined for delaying retraining the brp card.

Thank you ever so much for putting me at ease! At the end of the day, it's not been that long really, especially as the previous reply said in the covid circumstances.
Thank you again! :)
