Dear All,
Just wondering if one can change the first name of a 4 month old child? already registered with council within 42 days and got birth certificate however due to some reasons family wants to change the first name of the child before applying first british passport. not sure if this is possible without involving court order etc like adults change their name.
thanks in advance
not sure weather this is the right forum for this topic. Apology in advance in case if this is not right forum and would not mind if moderator would like to move this in the right category.

Name changes are often asked about by adults applying for their passport after naturalisation.
Not sure about changing childrens' names (like deed poll for adult). Maybe this helps:
https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-pol ... hilds-name
But consider:
- does child have a foreign passport? Can you change the name on that passport?
- does child have a British registration certificate? Name on certificate cannot be changed.
- Is child's claim to British citizenship based on your ILR?
- Does child have a UK birth certificate? Name can be changed?
HMPO will want to see the same name on all document. Maybe better to get first passport first with current name. Then apply for a new passport with changed name providing deed poll.

And just in case, where was child born? If outside the UK, you'll be better off asking in "other countries" subforum.

thanks for highlighting the points however the child born in england and registered with the local council within 42 days of birth. The child is eligible for british passport based on his british father.
Part from council birth certificate there is no other official ID or docs yet. The british passport will be the first official ID so just wondering how the first name can be changed on birth certificate? because that is what hmpo will require when applying for passport..

while exploring some information I came across some says children after baptised are allowed to change their name within 12 months time by simply apply to the registrar without going into deed poll which is lengthy and costly option.
any detail information or authenticity on this option? also is it only after baptise? what about other religion?

As far as I know deed poll is not expensive.

yes dead poll it self is not expensive as the fee is only £49 around however either of these two specialist will make things expensive for sure
To change the name of a child under 18 you can either:
make an unenrolled deed poll by using a specialist deed poll agency or a solicitor
apply for an enrolled deed poll from the Royal Courts of Justice

Just give the link - I must add I'm not an expert on this and can only comment generally based on what has been posted here. If it's on gov.uk then whatever they say/advise is based on the law and processes in place.

This is a very unusual situation. Not many people would have experience in this regards. You're better off going back to the council and asking them how you can change your child's name. The ink on the birth certificate isn't even dry yet.
There might be a very simple solution to this issue.

Well thanks thats what I thought so because at the end if the day its local council who i ll have to deal with so first hear them out how they respond to such situations. I did sent a email to the registrar requesting guidance and help in this regard and now waiting for their reply. let’s see what they will come up with!!!

If I was you, I'd make time to go there in person. After all, you went in person to get the birth certificate. Face to face solves problems faster than emails. Go with you Id and that of your Spouse. If you weren't the parent that initially signed the BC, go with your marriage cert. as well.
