Life in UK Test deadline missed. Please help.

My wife applied for ILR and we got a letter asking for her to take a LIUK Test (She's from the US and I didn't know she had to take one of these). It also asked for more documents proving we lived together between certain dates. However, we had no idea that it was from the home office and were out when it was delivered and weren't able to pick it up for a while. Because of this we didn't have enough time or money to book the test and get the documents we need and the deadline has expired. I called the home office and after being on hold for an hour they just said that all we can do is write a letter to the home office. Not very helpful.
Can anyone tell me how this will be dealt with and what will likely happen to our application?
Thanks in advance

No easy answer - I suspect it depends on the case load of the person handling your case. And once it is taken up, it will end up in a rejection of ILR (and maybe an extension of the current visa depending on what it is and what other documents were needed)
Follow the advice they gave - write in to the home office asking for more time. Provide your reasons and actions taken (like a confirmed booking of the LIUK test).
And, lastly, send in any of the documents requested to the HO as soon as you have them by Special delivery to guarantee it reaches them as fast as it can.
Unfortunately, ignorance is not an excuse on its own, especially when the instructions are quite clear on LIUK.

We haven't been able to afford the LIUK test. Since we had to find £1800 for the visa application we've had to borrow heavily just to catch up from that. We don't even currently possess £50 to book a test and we've borrowed as much as we can already. That might sound unbelievable but it's true, we have about £30 between us until the end of the month and are living off dry noodles and rice every day. We were given about 2 weeks notice for all of this. We found the money for the biometrics when they asked for that but we had more of a notice period then.

If you do not send the Life in the UK test your application will be refused. Unfortunately you have to find the resources for her to sit the test.

We're going to try and borrow the money tonight to get it booked tonight. Hoping that if we can do it before the end of the week we might be okay.
