Query about Dependents

Hello everyone!

I have a query about my family’s GT dependent Visa. I moved to UK along with my family (wife & 2kids) in the end of September 2023 on Skilled Visa route. We got visa for 2 years at that time. Then in August 2024 I moved to Global Talent Visa valid till August 2027. I didn’t change dependent Visa at that time. I will be eligible for ILR in end of September 2026 as endorsed by Royal Society of Engineers. Now I have to renew visas for my dependents wife and children aged 14 and 12 yrs in September 2025. I am confused now as someone told me that my family cannot get visa beyond Aug 2027. Also their last visa renewal should be 3 years. Can anyone suggest the best option to renew so they complete their 5 years smoothly before applying for ILR in September 2028. Please provide suggestions that is cost effective.

That's correct.

The visa expiry date of dependants will be always the same of the lead applicant.

They will need to apply for another extension before/by August 2027. It will be a 3 years extension if you have ILR at the time of application (provided the rules between now and 2027 remain with no changes).

Thanks for your reply and clarification. So I can now apply for one year Sep 25-Sep26? And I try to apply my ILR within 28days to my 3 years completion (late Sep 26) with fast tract and them immediately proceed with dependents 3 yr extension just before expiry of their 1 year GT dependent extension? Can I do like that.. This will atleast save me a year IHS charges. Any suggestion on that? Thanks in advance

I am not sure what you mean with apply now for one year. The dependants visa will match the expiry date of the main applicants GTV.

When the lead applicant + dependants are applying at the same time, you (main applicant) can choose the duration of the GTV which will apply to everyone, but I think you cannot do this when applying for a dependants extension only. Their visas expiry date will be always yours.

Thanks for your reply and sorry for all the confusion. My VISA is till aug 2027. Dependent visa expiring in Sep 2025. My doubt was if I apply for 2 yrs now for them it will not be complete 2 yrs. So I was asking if I go with one year extension till September 26 and then 3 year extension ( Hopefully to have ILR by applying within 28 days of becoming eligible for ILR in Sep2026).. Will that be ok?

You cannot choose the visa length for dependents. So no, you can choose a 1 year extension because it is convenient.

Any application for dependents you submit will be granted with the same expiry date as your visa. This is how the rules work.

My query is can i apply for extension now to avail full 5 yrs)? Any issue with applying for Extension now? Or it is not allowed. You suggestions will be highly appreciated.

It's not about what the applicant likes, the immigration rules say so.

No issues with that.

As the lead applicant, you can apply for an extension at any time and choose duration.

There's no requirement to apply for ILR in exactly 3 or 5 years.

So the best and cost saving is I go for GT extension now to get full 5 years ( till Aug 2029) and then in September 2025, I extend my family visas as GT dependent for 3 years ( till Sept 2028).

No, any extension you apply for dependents in September 2025 will have an expiry date of Aug 2029, same as your expiry date.

You seem to not be understanding that as long as you are a GTV visa holder, ANY visa you apply for for your dependents will have the same expiry date as your GTV visa. You cannot choose the duration you want.

The ONLY time a GTV Dependent visa is granted for 3 years based on the immigration rules is when the main GTV visa holder has been granted ILR and the dependents apply for a GTV dependent visa AFTER the main GTV visa holder has received ILR.
