FLR (M) - passport expiration

Hello,

I am currently on a Spouse visa valid for 2.5 years, it is now up for renewal in 6 months. The passport I hold for Australia will expire mid-way through the extension visa (if approved!). Will this prevent my application being approved?

No it won't. There is no requirement that it must be valid for x amount of months. It must be valid when you apply.
